Spring=Mustard=Allergies
Or at least it is in my world. Mustard is a wildflower that we see in great numbers in our area starting about this time of year. I spotted this patch of mustard growing in an abandoned orchard near my house.
The Handbook of Nature Study, page 460:"Because of their beauty and scientific value, special need exists for the protection of our native wild flowers and shrubs. It is understandable that these uncultivated plants should attract the visitor, but in too many instances he is not satisfied to enjoy their beauty as they exist in their natural habitats. All too frequently he picks flowers in large numbers, only to discard them faded and wilted a few hours later."(note this was written in 1911)
Look at those beautiful flowers. |
"Some flowers are so abundant that they can be picked in moderation if the roots are not disturbed, if plenty of flowers are left for seed, and if the plant itself is not taken with the flower."
Another beautiful spring day.
Another beautiful spring day.
I love to see whole fields of mustard golden yellow, but then I don't think I'm allergic to it. They really do have pretty flowers.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures, Barb. When we lived in the capital city of Turkey there was hardly a blade of grass to be seen, but there was a small lot down the street filled with weeds and trash. We would use this lot for nature study. One day we discovered mustard seed growing there and were so happy to see these wildflowers. The children collected the little pods and played with the black seeds making it pretend food. We never forgot what mustard looked like after that. It was a small gift of beauty given to us and so has a special memory in our hearts. Thanks for bringing up happy thoughts today.
ReplyDeleteI just found your Green Hour, I am going to spend the weekend sorting through your info, and sign up for next week. We live on 100+ acres in a beautiful valley and much of our life is spent outdoors, taking some time together to look deeply will be a wonderful addition to our studies, Thanks!
