Purple Day in the Garden: Blackberries and Hydrangeas

Today was watering the corners day in the garden. But I was greatly rewarded by a whole bush full of blackberries......some ripe enough to pick and eat.

So here is just a sampling of the fruits of my berry picking. Mmmmm....don't tell anyone. I probably ate just about as many as made it into the bowl. :)

The blackberries in our yard are the stubbornest plants around. My husband has tried over the last 21 years to eradicate them from the edges of the yard but they will come back year after year. I have come to a working relationship with the blackberries. I let them grow a little and be watered and they provide me with an organic, delicious, sweet treat on hot summer days. Tonight I will be making a blackberry cobbler for my hubby....maybe he will come to peace with the pokey, thorny, hearty blackberry like I have. We can always hope.

The hydrangeas are such a wonderful purple color this year. This is my third bouquet and there are plenty more to come.

Here is the vase for the kitchen table.

How can you help but smile with that greeting you in the morning?

The little joys of summer.

  1. That's it! I'm coming to move in with you.
Fresh berries in your backyard...didn't you pick strawberries a while back in your yard? Fresh flowers on the table.
How long did it take you to build up your back yard into the beautiful garden it is today?

  2. Do you live in the Pacific NW? We used to and had hydrangias and berries. I planted them here in the high desert. The berries are puny and the hydrangias shrivled up and blew away. But, we have lots of sunshine and red rocks.

Did you ever finish your Apologia Biology/HNS combo article? If so, where can I read it?

  3. Such beautiful colours! My son would go crazy seeing those blackberries and hydrangeas - also brought back happy memories of blackberry-picking when I was a child.
    Thanks for posting this!

  4. KL,

We live in Northern California...in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. It gets really hot here but the hydrangeas seem to thrive. I actually have three different kinds in the garden: pink, lacy crown, and the purple ones. The purple ones only get morning sun though.

Are you talking about this page that I wrote about Apologia?

    Becky,
We have lived in this house for 21 years but we only really have been building the garden up for about 10 of those years. The berries were here before us but everything else we have planted. We do a little bit at a time as we have the energy and finances. Since they built a Home Depot in our town, we have been encouraged to do a lot this year.

  7. Thanks for the bittersweet memory. Last year we left our Oregon home which was overrun with wild blackberries! We had a love-hate relationship with them till August when the berries were ripe. Aaahh... I will always treasure the memories of the bowls and bowls of blackberries!
