Oak Tree Study - Autumn Colors and Acorns
For this challenge, take the opportunity to look in your area for oak trees. Use the suggestions below to make an autumn study of a local oak or one that you hope to see some day. It is also a perfect time to start thinking about a fall color walk and planning an afternoon to discover what autumn colors your children can find.

Getting Started Suggestion:
If you already own the Getting Started ebook, complete Outdoor Hour Challenge #9-Small Square Study. Complete your small square study under an oak tree...mark your square and then look to see what you can find. Perhaps divide your journal page into "oak tree items" and "other". Create a list of things you find in your square that are related to the oak tree like acorns, leaves, twigs, etc. Use the notebook page found in the Getting Started ebook to record your result if you wish.

ReplyDeleteI homeschool 8 children and run a family business. When my first children were younger, I had so much more free time and loved my Handbook of Nature Study. With the birth of more children (and then the birth of our business), there wasn't as much time for it.
But we just moved to a new farm and the children have been out in the woods identifying trees in their search for persimmon and paw paw trees. They've found several and have been gathering and eating the fruit from both trees.
Even though I no longer have time for nature notebooks, the love of nature and observing the natural world around us is still very much a part of our lives.
And I think it is so important to instill that in our children.
